The short version

Your Time Mile Timeline export is never uploaded. The file you drop in is opened and parsed by code running in your own browser. It is not sent to a server, not stored on one, and I never see it. Everything below is the detail around that, and the two places where something does leave your machine.

What is processed, and why

Your location history

Read in the browser, held in the page while you work, and gone when you close the tab. It is not transmitted anywhere. Exports you generate are written straight to your device.

Addresses, if you ask for them

Time Mile can turn the coordinates of a trip's start and end into street addresses. This is the first thing that leaves your machine, and only when you press the button. The coordinates are rounded to about eleven metres and grouped before being sent, from your browser, to the Google Maps Platform geocoding service; results are cached in your browser for thirty days so the same place is never looked up twice. Nothing else about the trip is sent, and the request is not tied to your account.

Your account

If you create one: your email address and an account identifier, held in Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore (Google Ireland Limited). Signing in with Google gives me your email address and nothing more. The account exists to remember what you have bought. Deleted on request, and with it the record of which years you have access to.

Your purchases

Handled by Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd. You enter your card on Stripe's own pages; I receive the outcome, the last four digits, and the billing details you gave. Invoices and the accounting record behind them are kept for seven years, which Belgian bookkeeping law requires.

Audience measurement

Time Mile carries Google Analytics 4 and a Google Ads conversion tag, which tell me how many people arrive, from where, and how far they get. They start denied: until you accept the banner they store and read nothing on your device. This is the second thing that can leave your machine, and it is about pages, not about trips — no part of your Timeline file is ever included. Refusing costs you nothing, and the choice is remembered in your browser rather than in a cookie sent anywhere.

Error reports

When something breaks, a report goes to Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.) so I can fix it. It is deliberately configured to send no cookies, no request or response bodies, no headers and no account information — the stack trace and the page it happened on, not what you were working with.

Legal bases

• Running your account and delivering what you bought: performance of a contract.
• Keeping invoices for seven years: a legal obligation under Belgian law.
• Address lookup: your request — nothing is sent until you ask for it.
• Audience measurement and advertising tags: consent.
• Error reports: my legitimate interest in software that works.

Who else sees it

Only the processors named above: Google, Stripe and Sentry, each for the one job described. Nothing is sold, rented or shared for advertising by anyone else. Where these providers process data outside the European Union they do so under the safeguards their own terms provide, the European Commission's standard contractual clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

Your rights

You may ask for a copy of what is held about you, have it corrected, have it deleted, object to a use of it, or ask for it in a portable form. One email to [email protected] is enough and I answer within a month. There is no charge.

If you are not satisfied with how I handle it, you may complain to the Belgian Data Protection Authority, rue de la Presse 35, 1000 Brussels, autoriteprotectiondonnees.be, or to the authority where you live.

Changes

When this page changes the date at the top changes with it. If a change affects what leaves your machine, it will be said plainly here rather than folded into a paragraph.
